Tufts University is established in Medford.

1852

Originally Tufts College, it is founded by the Universalist Church, supported by a donation of land and money from businessman Charles Tufts, and located at 419 Boston street. As a result of lobbying by Harvard University, the new school’s charter initially prohibits the granting of medical degrees, a ban that is not lifted until 1867.* The school assumes its current name in 1955.
